Last month saw Canon Marketing (Malaysia) organized its ninth Canon PhotoMarathon competition in Sarawak’s capital Kuching where hundreds submitted creative photos, proving that the interest in photography is very much alive in East Malaysia. This weekend, the annual full-day competition came to Kuala Lumpur and Canon’s mission of unearthing talents concluded with the crowning of Malaysia’s 2015 PhotoMarathon champion at Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur.
The Canon PhotoMarathon 2015 Kuala Lumpur edition saw an overwhelming participation of 1100 hobbyists, amateurs and professionals photographers along with thousands of brilliant photographic renditions. In a race against time, contestants were required to capture the best photos of three (3) different themes, Culture, Wild Colour and Contrast which were announced instantaneously by Canon on the competition day itself.
Contending in a sea of creative submissions, Mohd Samsi Sumairi’s winning’s piece on stood out and won the hearts and minds of the panel judges.
“This is my sixth year participating in Canon’s annual PhotoMarathon and I am extremely thrilled to be able to walk away as the Grand Prize winner this year! Triumphing over thousands of creative stills is definitely an accomplishment and this experience has opened my eyes to the many different ways of taking and interpreting a picture. This competition is a great platform to develop skills and express art, so kudos to Canon for putting in the effort in making this challenge a yearly affair. Thank you, Canon, for the opportunity and for the fantastic prize!” said 48-year old Mohd Samsi.
The all-expense paid 8-day photo clinic to Japan was not the only prize Mohd Samsi took home that day. The government officer from Rawang also walked away with a list of big-ticket products comprising of a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, and products from partner sponsors SanDisk, Shiro, Fujitso, Adobe, Digital Camera Magazine and Japan Endless Discovery.
Close behind the shutters of Canon’s new PhotoMarathon champion are second and third place winners Ignitius Hai Yuen Kong, a sales and marketing executive, and photography freelancer Asmady Ahmad. Both winners also took home attractive prizes from Canon and its participating sponsors.
For the Junior Category, 16-year old Andy Tan Liang Sam from Penang took home the first prize, while 15-year old Jie Xen Quek and 16-year old Hoe Kiat Lim bagged second and third place respectively.
Director of the Imaging Communication Products Division of Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Donny Ling said, “The Canon PhotoMarathon has proven to be one of our successful annual signature events. Since its debut in 2006, we have seen increased participation every single year and this evidently shows the people’s interest in photography. We had close to 400 participants in the first year, and that has increased gradually over the years. This year, we are proud to share this exciting challenge with 1100 Malaysians. Across the 10 countries in the region, we have over 20,000 participants!”

“Beyond the popularity of this competition, what we really strive to achieve is to inspire a passion for photography and to create an avenue for the people to express themselves through their pictures. We are delighted that contestants come back year after year to participate with much zeal and enthusiasm; and we take pride in helping them develop invaluable on-ground photography skills,” added Ling.
As part of Canon’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, the registration fees collected from contestants were donated to Cancer Research Malaysia, Pertubuhan Wanita dan Kesihatan KL and the Association of Learning Disabilities (GOLD). Similar to past years, all proceeds from the Canon PhotoMarathon were channelled to various charity organizations and relief centres.

“The Canon PhotoMarathon is more than just an exciting platform for photographers to showcase their talents. As a socially responsible corporate citizen operating in Malaysia, we at Canon also strive to give back to our community. All registration fees collected this year with a total amounting to RM12,000 from both the Open and Junior categories will go towards providing relief for these charity organizations,” said Ling.
